This week is International Women’s Week, leading up to International Women’s Day on March 8th. Arkansas Tech is observing this event with “a week of celebration, education, and awareness surrounding women’s and gender issues”. The theme this year is “Breaking the Mold”. IMO, it’s great that not only are we celebrating all the great things women have done and will do, but we’re bringing up social issues, like sexual violence, and body image. I applaud the fact that we’re digging deeper, and really making the week count.
We’d all like to believe we live in a gender equal society, but statistics like “92 per cent of women reported having experienced some form of sexual violence in public spaces in their lifetime”, or that in 2015, women working full time in the United States typically were paid just 80 percent of what men were paid, and that women of color experience an even larger pay gap prove otherwise. Statistics like these are simply unacceptable, and it’s time for us to build a community where they’re nonexistent. Let’s fight #LikeAGirl for the women who are part of these statistics. Let’s educate #LikeAGirl so that we can all work towards a common goal and understanding. And above all, let’s be strong #LikeAGirl in working towards equality. Until next time,
